These are the five most exciting Nintendo announcements from E3
12 June 2018

Nintendo have to be one of the most consistent brands in the world. You can spot their stuff a mile off, you know exactly what you’re getting and you know it’s going to be great. Who else can compete with that? Pixar, maybe. Nike? Nah, some of their stuff is quite subtle.

Anyway…

1. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

LET’S NONE OF US, EVER, EVER DO ANY WORK AGAIN, LET’S JUST DO THIS, LET’S PLAY THIS, THIS IS OUR JOB NOW. SMASH SMASH SMASH. Even if everything else about it didn’t scream out the most fun in the world, Snake’s appearance from beneath his famous cardboard box is so damned satisfying. Excitingly, every single Smash Bros. character to ever appear in the series, including all the DLC characters from Smash Bros. for the Wii U and 3DS, are here, totally over 60 playable characters. And they’re new, up-to-date versions as well, which means Mario has Cappy from Super Mario Odyssey, and Link has his remote bombs and cape from Breath Of The Wild. Plus, the Inklings from Splatoon and, unbelievably, Ridley from Metroid. And, if you’ve got a USB adapter, you can use your old GameCube controller. Beautiful.

2. Fortnite

Fortnite, the biggest game in the world at the moment, is on the Switch now, like as of now, like they put it up on the store during the presentation. Sometimes you look at the world and think, well how the hell does that work?

3. Super Mario Party

This is not a good advert, but what it is advertising looks pretty exciting. In bringing Mario Party to the Switch, they’ve thrown in a pretty awesome idea – look at how you can align or misalign two Switches and have the screens join up in more creative ways that just one big screen. Make a long one! An L-shape! A T-shape! It feels like an innovation ripe with possibility, just stuck in a bit of a cheesy advert.

4. Daemon X Machina

There isn’t a lot of information out there about this game besides what is in the trailer, but look at the trailer, it’s awesome. Giant anime mech things beating the hell out of each other, with cartoon explosions and go-faster lines. Glorious.

5. Fire Emblem: Three Houses

The newest chapter in an RPG series that is, admittedly, a lot more popular in Japan than here, is the first console outing for the franchise in over a decade. Look at the fights! They’re normally a real letdown in games like this, but these look magnificent. Fun!

And there’s more…

  • Nintendo have always been the kings of local multiplayer, and Overcooked 2 looks like a massive laugh, especially thanks to the addition of throwing.
  • As does Killer Queen Black, a retro-styled platformer for up to eight players.
  • Dragon Ball FighterZ, a hit on PS4, is being ported across and looks badass
