Hoverbike to arrive in 2017

It's finally happening. The future has a delivery date, and it's only three years away.

Back in 2012, California-based Aerofex made the dream of every 12-year-old boy (and, lets be honest, most warm-blooded men) come true when they demonstrated a working prototype of the Aero-X hoverbike. A driver, mounted on what appeared to be an ungainly motorbike, was able to float, turn and meander about a desert location, powered by two ground-facing rota blades. It looked unsteady, difficult and impossibly cool.

After ironing out some kinks and adding an extra seat, Aerofex are now taking orders for a newly designed Aero-X - capable of flying two passengers at a hair-buffeting speed of 45mph, at an altitude of 3 metres. Set for delivery in 2017, you'll soon be able to bother pigeons and terrify the elderly for as little as £50,415 ($85,000).

No, it's doesn't have the sophistication of a sci-fi hoverbike, and we can almost hear the belly-laugh the DVLA will emit in response to an insurance application - but we're glad Aerofex are daring to dream. Fingers crossed we'll get a hoverboard by 2020.
