Here's how to add bold, italic and strikethrough text to Whatsapp messages

Move aside, Emojis

Here's how to add bold, italic and strikethrough text to Whatsapp messages
30 March 2016

WhatsApp just added some dull, pointless interesting new features to its messaging service.

The latest update to the Facebook-owned app (version 2.12.17 for iOS and 2.12.535 for Android) now allows users to embolden, italicise and strikethrough their messages.

It's like the world of typeface is fighting back against Emojis, adding more expression to simple lettering. Take that, cry laugh face. Here's how to write in each new style.

Bold

Add an asterisks (*) before and after the words you want to be in bold:

  • *all of this will be bold* but this won't

Italics

Add an underscore ( _ ) before and after the words you want to be italicised:

  • _this will be italicised_ but this won't be

Strikethrough

Add a tilde (~) before and after the words you want to be struck through:

  • ~this will be struck through~ but this won't

If your friend isn't seeing these new formatting features, they need to update their version of the app.
