Durex wants to make an aubergine-flavoured condom

The condom brand is trying to make a point about safe sex

Durex wants to make an aubergine-flavoured condom
06 September 2016

Durex intends to make an aubergine-flavoured condom, because we've reached a point where emoji have become too powerful for their own good.

"Lol, that's stupid," is almost certainly your response - that, or that weird cry-laughing face that won 'word of the year' some time ago (seriously, this is real life now).

And you'd be right - it is stupid. This was Durex's attempt at making the point that while we've made it easy to communicate with emoji on some levels, the image-based language is lagging behind on some important topics, like practising safe sex. Hence, Durex wants Unicode - creators of the universal emoji coding tools - to create a condom emoji.

"Emojis of this sort will enable young people to overcome embarrassment around the discussion of safe sex, encourage conversation and raise awareness of the importance of using condoms in protecting against sexually transmitted infections, including HIV and AIDS," Durex has previously said in a statement.

Given the vast array of emoji now available, we don't see why a SFW condom emoji couldn't be considered. The aubergine emoji could return to being an innocent plant, and all discussions of sex could actually involve an emoji that makes sense in every context.
