Make sure you’re ahead of the pack with your autumn trainer game
After a long, sweaty summer, we’re finally on the home straight to peak jackets and shorts season. It’s a season that’s not too hot, not too cold, but just perfect for our much-loved layering needs.
A blissful season where you can wear a nice flannel overshirt, a t-shirt and a sturdy pair of camo shorts without your forehead beading up.
But what about your feet we hear you say? Well, friend, rest easy. We got you. Here’s out picks of the best trainers for autumn.
New Balance M990NV4
New Balance are the king of dad shoes; they’re the founding fathers of The Dad Shoe© and their 990v4s are the OG main men. Originally released in 1982, these were the first ever $100 “sneakers” and now, more than 30 years on, they’re still making moves. Ideal for running or walking, with chinos, shorts or basically anything else in your wardrobe, the 990v4 is the perfect everyday trainer.
Saucony Shadow 5000
Saucony has been good at making trainers for decades and has undergone a resurgence in the UK over the past few of years. One of their most iconic silhouettes – the Shadow 5000 – has received a little makeover since its first release back in the eighties and are now more beautiful than ever. Comfy, durable and available in loads of different colourways, the Shadow 5000 is a trainer ready for weather uncertainty.
Karhu Fusion 2.0
The Scandinavians have always been known for making nice gear, but the Finnish probably less than the rest. One brand that does originate from there though is Karhu, a sportswear brand that’s been making trainers for over a century. Their new Fusion 2.0 is peak Karhu, mixing classic styles with techy, advanced features. Not only do the Fusions look the mustard, they have an air cushion sole that’s so soft that you could probably sleep on it if they ever decided to produce them mattress size.
Novesta Marathon Felt
Hailing from Partizanske in central Slovakia, Novesta has been producing unique footwear since the 1930s and has become of Eastern Europe’s most notable shoemakers. Their AW18 rework of the Novesta Marathon - originally released in the 80s - has seen them opt for a felt finish ensuring comfort is number one, and that they look superb with contrasting woollen socks.
Nike x Off White Air Presto
One of Nike’s most popular collaborations in recent years, their Off White Air Presto has become one of the trainers of 2018. Designed by Off White and Louis Vuitton Creative Director Virgil Abloh, the trainer incorporates their iconic red tag around the lace hole, all working alongside the typically sporty Nike aesthetic. An adaptation of the Nike Presto – one of Nike’s comfiest trainers ever in our opinion – this collaboration will give your feet the treat of their life.
adidas Tobacco x C.P. Company
After collaborating earlier this year, adidas and C.P. Company have come together again to bring us an entire AW18 collection that’ll see dads up and down the country camping overnight for a glimpse. Merging their shared association with football and the “Casuals” scene, the two have created berry adaptation of the classic adidas Tobacco. A sleek, no-nonsense silhouette that look mint with some chino shorts and a nice big jacket. We’d swerve the big goggles, mind.
Reebok Workout Plus R12
These are absolute classics and they’ll probably feature in the must have trainers of the summer, winter, spring and apocalypse. A timeless classic and one of Reebok’s most successful silhouettes, they’ve remained a staple in streetwear for decades. Wear these with shorts, chinos, socks, no socks, topless, top on, pants off - Workouts are everyone’s best mate and a must for anyone.
ARKK Copenhagen Apextron Mesh
A little out there compared to the rest, but ARKK Copenhagen are only four years old and aren’t ones for dwelling on the past, which might explain the more futuristic aesthetic. ARKK pride themselves on basing their unique trainer shapes on their day-to-day surrounding in the Danish capital, which makes for odd, but quirky shaped models. Their Apextron Mesh though oozes simplicity with its minimal, no-nonsense design, plus it gives you a few inches in height thanks to the delicious looking sole.
Asics Gel-Saga
After going quiet for a few years, Asics have reintroduced their GEL-SAGA in a fresh New York Knicks inspired colourway. Despite being designed for running long distances, these are perfect to wear when you’re doing absolutely nothing, going down the pub or taking pictures of your new trainers on Instagram. With their 90s P.E. vibe always apparent, the GEL-SAGA’s new colourway keeps things fresh and has a balearic theme about it.
adidas Forest Grove
The Forest Grove is more formerly known as the adidas Oregon, a part of the same adidas family that the New York and Boston trainers hail from. An iconic bulky, webbed sole paired with a clean off-white base makes the Forest Grove extremely versatile, allowing them to go equally as well with a pair of khaki fatigue pants as they would with your pulled up white socks and your little short shorts.
