Hanging out with your best mates is much easier when you’re a kid. You go over to each other’s houses or down to the park every day. You’re inseparable. As you get older, grown-up stuff gives you less spare time for your pals, so any moments you can spend together should be high quality. The perfect bonding experience? Road trip!

Obviously there are two vital decisions when planning a road trip. One, where are you going to go? Two, what car are you going to drive? Because you don’t want your everyday car, you want something special. Perhaps the absolute ultimate in road trips is the Pacific Coast Highway, running along California. It’s a trip that demands an American classic, so treat yourselves to a 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible.

If you can get everyone together long enough to do somewhere really far flung, consider the Great Ocean Road in Melbourne, Australia. It’s a stunning coastal stretch and, if you throw your boards in the back, you can stop to surf as you go. Take a car that can handle all your kit and any terrain, like the 2016 Jeep Renegade. A proper adventurer’s car.

On a trip where anything can happen, you want to be dressed for any eventuality. Tu’s stylish new collection, available here, runs from slim-cut polos to sleek overcoats, so you’ll be looking sharp wherever you go.

Travel in style

The new collection from Tu by Sainsbury’s delivers a stylish and adaptable wardrobe ready to equip the modern man for anything. Their go-anywhere pieces are ideal for packing a duffle bag for a last minute road trip. Looking for adventure? Get your motor running and experience the thrill of the open road in one of these beauties.

1965 Ford Mustang Convertible

The iconic Ford Mustang was thrashed around the streets of San Francisco by Steve McQueen in Bullitt for what’s arguably the greatest ever big screen car chase. Make like a movie star, don a pair of aviators, rev that V8 engine and burn rubber coast to coast from Chicago to Los Angeles. Plan your jaunt along Route 66 with stop offs in Albuquerque (Breaking Bad country) and The Grand Canyon in a Mustang Convertible for the ultimate road trip cruising with the top down.

1971 Fiat 500

Manufactured between 1957 and 1975, the Cinquecento is perfect for navigating the tight streets and piazzas of Italy’s metropolitan centres. Conceived by auto design guru Dante Giacosa, this two-door sun-roofed gem with its rear-mounted engine predates the Mini and beats congestion on the streets of Rome and Milan. It’s not fast but this comfy car offers the chance to get nice and close with the special person in your life and ditch the plastic hire car option for an old school way to travel. Andare!

1971 Jaguar E-Type Series 2

Head out on the highway in this Seventies stunner and the iconic curves of a Can-Am styled racer will be turning heads just like your impeccable style. With a top speed of 153 mph open her up and feel the rush of 0-60 in 6.7 seconds. Petrolheads can take a fly/drive break to make a pilgrimage and follow in the tyre tracks of Brit racing legends John Surtees and Jackie Oliver, who both won the legendary border-straddling Canadian American Challenge Cup six-race series.

2016 Jeep Renegade

Head for the wide-open wild in a 4x4, which seats five comfortably. And with a boot big enough to stash a tent and rucksacks you’re primed for the great outdoors. Featuring 17-inch off-road aluminium rims, it can take the worst British weather can chuck at you while in pursuit of nirvana across rocky, muddy or snowy terrain. Head north and get off the beaten track discovering the Lake District or take a ferry to Northern Ireland and make for County Down in search of Winterfell Castle and other locations from Game Of Thrones.
