4 style lessons we should learn from the Danish
04 December 2018

When it comes to minimalistic, laid-back fashion, Copenhagen has Paris, New York, and London beat hands down.

The Danish vibe is casual, but at the same time, uniquely smart. There’s an effortlessness to Northern European fashion – and Denmark in particular – that hasn’t quite managed to evolve elsewhere.

“We have a long tradition of minimalism in style,” explains Danish lifestyle and fashion photographer Bobby Anwar.

“It’s about simplistic expressions,” an ethos that extends beyond fabrics to the average Dane’s choice of accessories, too. “We’re over-exposed to smart this and that, so even down to your smartwatch, keep it simple.”

Wether it comes from a deconstructed silhouette, a soft colour palette, or contrasting textures, there are lessons to be learned from the Danes that can help boost every wardrobe. Here are four to adopt now.

1. Layer like a pro

There are obvious, functional advantages to layering up – mainly that you’ll survive cold conditions on your morning jaunt to pick up your first flat white of the day, but also have the option to pare it back when you come face to face with your local coffeeshop’s insane heating.

From a fashion POV, you’re able to play with perspective. Here, the long, untucked shirt, open jacket, and flowing scarf create the impression of height, while the wide-brimmed trousers help add a casual element to the outfit, without it looking overly-boxy.

In short, the Danes have the perfect mix of creative office smarts and street style, and this right here is how it’s done.

2. Accessorise sparingly, but effectively

With rolled up joggers and white trainers, this look screams ‘pitch-ready’, while the tan coat and white tee combination suggest relaxed professionalism.

An easy way to tie the two together is with a single, statement accessory. Not that it has to be garish, just quietly noticeable. Skagen’s new Falster 2 smartwatch offers a new take on the smartwatch, and is the ideal candidate.

You’ll get all the usual fitness metric trackers in real time, sure, (not to mention, Google Pay, Google Assistant, customisable dials, and magnetic straps), but, with a slick colour-range, there’s no sacrificing style for smarts.

The rose-tone link option is slightly louder than it’s brothers, but still smart enough to catch your bosses’ eye. Pair it with this jacket, and you’re on to a winning formula.

3. Invest in a statement coat

It’s winter, so investing in a good coat should be a no-brainer. But dragging out last year’s bomber from the back of the cupboard is a mistake.

Instead, opt for quality outerwear in the form of a single-breasted wool coat. Not only will it help smarted up any outfit, it’s equally at home with trainers or brogues.

Likewise, a simple t-shirt looks just as smart beneath it as a heavy sweater, giving you options for days.

4. Don’t write off colour

Sure, Scandi style isn’t known as the most gregarious outfitting out there, but that doesn’t mean you need stick to a muted palette.

With neon making a comeback this winter (hello, orange beanies), it’s the perfect time to mix things up.

This is a fairly conventional coat, paired with plain joggers and crisp white trainers. There’s nothing too daring about this ensemble, but the pop of colour helps add personality to the laid-back look – ideal if you want to combine comfort and aesthetics from your wrist to your kicks.
