World tube map

In 1931, London Underground employee Harry Beck struck upon a novel approach of simplifying the capital's sprawling transport map. As stations were underground, thought Beck, no one gives a stuff about topological accuracy. It took a further two years of persuading before the London Underground eventually adopted what has become one of most iconic diagrammatic maps ever designed.

Artist and designer Michael Tompsett has taken Beck's design motif one step further - by reducing the world into a far more commutable affair. Why not take the Latin line around the coast of South America? Or delve into the far east on the Continental West?

Perfect for minimalist cartographers, the World Tube Map is available from Firebox.
