Everything you need to know about the latest internet trend: the 'Lemon Face Challenge'
18 April 2018

Remember the Ice Bucket Challenge? That thing where you plopped a big load of freezing water over yourself? The one that, even though it raised a lot of money for charity, was extremely irritating? That thing? Yeah? Well there’s a new one, buster, so you better fire up that phone camera and get filming!

The latest viral trend is the Lemon Face Challenge, and much like its chilly forebearer, it’s all for a good cause, making it really, really difficult to hate.

Essentially, what you’ve got to do is: eat a wedge of lemon, you maniac, and then nominate someone else to do it. It’s all very simple, and it’s to raise awareness of diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas, or DIPG, the second most common type of primary, high grade brain tumour in children.

It was started by 11-year-old Aubreigh Nicholas, who was diagnosed with DIPG in September, and has picked up steam ever since Alabama football coach Nick Saban shared his video:

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to find examples which aren’t entirely underwhelming, without resorting to posting videos of people clearly acting out in front of a camera. In fact, the effect is lessened even more when a large group of people do it - the point of this is the facial expressions, and if you can’t see them, then you might as well… not do it?

I mean:

Yet, as I said before, it’s for a good cause, so let’s not put it down too much. If you want to donate without the frankly vanilla threat of a lemon being in your mouth, then head on over here.

And if you want to look like a complete legend by sticking twenty five lemons in your mouth without even flinching, then just invest in some miracle berries, those funky things make sour things taste sweet.

Thank us later yeah?
