An actual US governor just tried to blame America's gun problems on zombie TV shows

Is 'The Walking Dead' to blame for gun massacres?

America, as we all know, has a problem with guns.

Americans own more guns per capita than residents of any other country, with four in 10 Americans owning a gun or living in a home with guns, according to a 2017 Pew Center study.

And being awash with weapons means the United States is also awash with gun-related murders, mass shootings and suicides. In 2018 alone, there have been more than 12,000 gun-related deaths in the United States.

But rather than accept that there might be some, small link between the incredible number of guns and the incredible number of gun deaths, one Republican, NRA-backed US governor has genuinely tried to blame TV shows about zombies, like The Walking Dead.

In an interview with conservative radio talk show host Leland Conway, Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin said the “culture of death” in America makes mass shooting more likely, according to The Courier-Journal.

“It starts with everything from the kind of entertainment that we focus on,” he said. “What’s the most popular topic that seems to be in every cable television network… Television shows are all about, what? Zombies! I don’t get it… that’s what we are. We celebrate death.”

“When a culture is surrounded by, inundated by, rewards things that celebrate death, whether it is zombies in television shows, the number of abortions… there’s a thousand justifications for why we do this,” he continued. “Eventually some of those young minds are not going to be able to handle it, and this is what we’re hearing.”

Bevin’s comments come just days after 12 people were killed in a gun massacre at a bar in Thousands Oaks, California and, before that, 11 congregants were slaughtered at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh and, before that, the school shooting in Florida and, before that, the country music concert massacre in Las Vegas and, before that, the Pulse gay nightclub shooting in Orlando and so the depressing cycle goes on and on and on…

Still at least Trump is doing his best to not deal with it…
