These customised wartime lighters are things of brutal beauty

Tim O’Brien’s heart-stopping war novel The Things They Carried defined its Vietnam War soldiers by the possessions found upon them, both the physical items they hauled through the warzone, and the less-tangible feelings and emotions that weighed them down. 

With that in mind, the servicemen that carried these incredibly customised lighters were some frighteningly ballsy, brave, fearless, occasionally hilarious dogs of war…
