Freedom of information request reveals crime hotspots

These are the most dangerous Underground stations & lines
05 February 2016

As if the congestion wasn't already bad enough, there's another reason for giving the Central and Piccadilly lines a miss: they've been revealed to be the worst lines on the Underground for instances of crime.

A Freedom of Information request by Susie Coen for Metro revealed the number of recorded offences for each line, as well as each individual station. Liverpool Street was revealed to be the least safe station on the network, with Leicester Square just behind, with both stations recording around twice as many incidents as third place Stockwell.

And the safest line? That'd be the Waterloo & City line, although we're not sure that really counts given its rather limited set of stations. The best 'real' lines are the Docklands Light Railway and the Metropolitan Line. Nice people up in Amersham, clearly.

British Transport Police responded by saying that crime on the Tube was on the decline. A spokesman said: "This was our lowest recorded level of crime nationally in more than a decade and makes it very clear that the chances of becoming a victim of an offence are minimal, especially when you consider that millions of passenger journeys made on the Underground each day.

"We’re committed to providing a safe environment for all passengers and rail staff, and all anti-social and criminal behaviour, including drug offences, are taken extremely seriously when brought to our attention. It is of course important to view any statistics in the context of their surroundings. Many of these stations are very busy hubs with huge numbers of people passing through, so numbers of offences are always likely to be higher than at smaller stations. Larger, busier stations also have a higher police presence, so more offences are likely to be recorded as a result of police-generated activity."
