The world's tallest roller coaster

The world's tallest roller coaster
17 June 2012

If you're queuing up for a ride called Cliffhanger then you're probably expecting either a) a long-awaited attraction based on your third favourite Stallone movie or b) something that might be the cause of a heart attack.

Rather predictably, it's the latter. The newly opened roller coaster has just nabbed the title of the world's tallest with a base elevation of 7,000 feet. Just to put that into perspective, the Empire State Building stands a total of 1,454 feet.

The reason for this height? Well the ride sits on an actual cliff that overlooks the city of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. It offers brave thrill seekers panoramic views of the local canyon if they're not too scared enough to look that is.

It cost a whopping $1million (£638,000) to build but the owners of Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park believe the ride is a "game changer" and it'll make back the money in time.
