Peugeot's volcanic rock sofa

Peugeot's volcanic rock sofa

Peugeot's volcanic rock sofa
01 April 2014

You had a hard day at the office. You've spent the last hour on an overcrowded bus intimately cradled in a construction worker's armpit. Finally, you shuffle over the threshold of your flat, throw your keys at the bowl (and miss) and collapse face first onto your Peugeot Onyx Sofa... breaking your nose.

That's because the Onyx Sofa is a 3m long 'seat' melded out of volcanic rock and carbon fibre. Comfy? Obviously not. Gorgeous? On a whole new level.

To construct this bench of kings/Tony Stark, designer Pierre Gimbergues and his team from the Peugeot Design Lab headed to France's Auvergne region in search of a suitable hunk of Volvic volcanic lava stone - a rock that's spent several thousand years filtering water. Having shaped the lump with the dark laws of ergonomics, Gimbergues & co spent weeks slaving over 3D designs and projections to create the perfect marriage between the stone and an expanse of lacquered carbon fibre.

Weighing north of 350kg and costing a nimble £112,000 (€135,000), the Onyx Sofa will be on show during the Milan Design Week, 8 - 13 April - complimenting the other fantastical car and design concepts of the lab. Head to the group's website to check out the amazing "making of" video.
