Sunderland Score Unstoppable Own Goal

Sunderland Score Unstoppable Own Goal

Sunderland Score Unstoppable Own Goal
20 October 2014

Poor, poor Sunderland fans. They may have had the high spot of a League Cup Final appearance last season, but the last few years have not been kind to them, especially on the own goal front.

They've made it something of a habit to help the opposition in the most direct manner possible, and they continued in this fine tradition by putting through their own net in glorious fashion twice during their humiliating 8-0 defeat to Southampton at the weekend.

First up, Argentine defender Santiago Vergini unleashed an unstoppable volley from 18 yards, leaving 'keeper Vito Mannone with no chance - a serious contender for one of the greatest own goals ever scored. But this clearly wasn't enough help for the opposition: Liam Bridcutt later made it 4-0 with a comedy stumble over his own feet.

In 2003, Sunderland scored three own goals in seven minutes in a match against Charlton, Stephen Wright scoring the first before a double from Michael Proctor; this encounter will have brought back unhappy memories of that.

Watch both own goals from Saturday, plus the three in seven minutes below. If you're still in the mood for some own goal misery/hilarity - CHECK OUT OUR LIST OF FOOTBALL'S MOST SPECTACULAR OWN GOALS
