The ‘Rick and Morty’ creator has some worrying news about the show's future
19 March 2018

Rick and Morty is one of the funniest, weirdest animated shows in recent times, inspiring a hard-core devotion among its legions of obsessed fans. And as one of said obsessed fans, I truly enjoyed the third season that finished in 2017 and have been desperately waiting for an announcement of when it will finally be coming back to TV.

Now Dan Harmon – the creative genius behind the show – has revealed some pretty upsetting news: the network Adult Swim STILL hasn’t renewed the show for a fourth season.

On Friday, a (really rude) fan called out Harmon on Twitter, saying: “Quit wasting time and go finish the next R&M season, you lazy alcoholic.”

Harmon, who also wrote the brilliant Community, replied: “I hear ya, tough spot. On one hand, it can be challenging, especially with crippling lazy alcoholism, to write a show that hasn’t been ordered by a network. On the other hand, the thought that fans like you pay the price… I mean… I’m gonna grab a drink.”

Unfortunately, if the show hasn’t been renewed this means the Rick and Morty team haven’t even started writing the next season. So basically, if the show ever comes back it won’t be for a very LOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGG time.

At the end of the last season in fact, the network warned that fans shouldn’t expect to see any more episodes for ages.

And in another Tweet, the show told viewers that the finale of Season 3 would “be the last new episode for a while, so gather your loved ones and squanch your hearts out”.

Another recent update on Rick and Morty Season 4 came from producer, writer and voice actor Ryan Ridley. Speaking with The Detroit Cast podcast, Ridley said: “As far as I know, no one is working on the show. I’m certainly not. So I don’t know what’s going on. I haven’t heard anything.

“Yeah, they really take their time. I’ve never understood why all parties - Dan, Justin and Adult Swim - didn’t get their shit together and make the show fast. I just don’t get it. It doesn’t make any sense. I’m sure they all have their reasons.”

We’ve reached out to Adult Swim and will let you know if they get back to us with any news. All our collective fingers are crossed.

And while it’s not really much consolation, a Rick and Morty-themed music video was just released for Run the Jewels’ new song ‘Oh Mama’. So, there’s that at least…
