Outdated gadgets get fossilised

Technology by its very definition is characterised by an inherent obsolescence. That’s right, the latest smartphone/tablet/Bank of England vault unlocking gizmo you got for Christmas will soon be laughably out-of-date.

But what will future generations of tech-heads think of our once-bright, state-of-the-art gadgets? This was surely the thinking behind artists Jeff Klarin and Rebecca Johnson’s provocative Future Fossils sculptures.

Taking a variety of iconic late 20th Century cultural artefacts – turntables, joysticks, cameras, lots and lots of cameras – and ‘fossilising’ them by casting them in cement and then colour-staining them, it gives rise to the idea of how they will be perceived in 100, 200, 300 years hence.
