The biggest clue yet about the identity of the next Doctor Who dropped on 'Newsnight'
06 July 2017

Current Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi has already announced his exit from the series at the end of the year – and speculation has been rife as to who might replace him.

Names such as Kris Marshall (aka “that bloke from the BT adverts”), Ben Whishaw and Richard Ayoade have been suggested – but a new hint from Newsnight presenter Evan Davis suggests that the Doctor could regenerate into female form.

“If you watched Doctor Who on Saturday there were some pretty heavy hints that the next Doctor might be a woman,” said Davis.

“Well, the bookies’ favourite, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, has denied claims that she’s going to be the first female Doctor… But then Joanna Lumley has already played the role for Comic Relief, so that would technically be true.”

Davis then played a clip of Fleabag star Waller-Bridge which he said suggested she may have “already given the game away”.

“I am not allowed to say anything about that one way or the other,” she said in an interview. “It would be cool – but I’m doing other stuff.”

And many fans of the show are preeeetty excited by the idea.

Alongside Capaldi’s regeneration, the Christmas episodes of Doctor Who will also be showrunner Steven Moffat’s last. It’s all change.
