Meryl Streep's scathing takedown of Donald Trump in a Golden Globes speech is brilliant

It's already being hailed as one of the best awards speeches of all time

Meryl Streep's scathing takedown of Donald Trump in a Golden Globes speech is brilliant
09 January 2017

If there’s one thing more powerful than Meryl Streep’s mantelpiece, it’s her character.

Notching the latest gong of her career at the Golden Globes last night - the Cecil B DeMille lifetime achievement award - the actress used her platform to deliver a wonderful and pertinent take down of Donald Trump ahead of the President-elect’s inauguration on 20 January.

Starting off by name-checking some of the nominees who happen to be foreign, and their importance to America and culture despite, y’know, being foreign, she then went for the jugular with this:

"This instinct to humiliate when it's modelled by someone in the public platform by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody's life. Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence,” warned Streep.

The speech, which you can watch above, was roundly cheered by the assembled A-listers and foreign press. And having joined Hillary Clinton’s campaign trail and spoke at the Democratic convention in Philadelphia last July, you can bet Streep will feel more aggrieved at Trump’s pussy power grab than most

Visibly emotional, she also used her speech at the Globes, an event ran by Hollywood’s Foreign Press Association, to call for journalists to “hold power to account" when overlord Trump takes charge.

Her warning was also echoed, albeit wryly, by Hugh Laurie, winning for Best Supporting Actor in a Show or Miniseries for his work in The Night Manager, who claimed he was honoured to have won “at the last ever Golden Globes".

Providing Laurie’s prediction doesn’t come true, here’s hoping for a Streep Presidential ticket in 2020.
