A Swedish prisoner broke out of prison in order to visit the dentist - then voluntarily returned and had his sentence increased as punishment.
An unnamed 51-year-old man at the open Östragård prison in the area of Vänersborg was serving a one-month sentence. Staff had ignored his pleas for urgent medical care, so he decided to break out.
He told dn.se that an inflamed tooth meant that "my whole face was swollen. I just couldn't stand it any more".
He promptly left the facility, found a local dentist, had the tooth removed, then turned himself in to police, who took him back to prison. He was issued with a warning by authorities and had his sentence increased by a day - he has since been released from prison.
