Kettlewell Scarecrow Festival

Charmingly bizarre or bizarrely charming?

Kettlewell Scarecrow Festival
15 August 2011

Tha’s nowt so queer as folk is a phrase beloved of people from Yorkshire. And they should know, for daft behaviour seems to fondly reside in the area commonly known as God’s own county by its inhabitants.

Take the village of Kettlewell for instance. For nine days every August this picturesque hamlet is transformed into a light-hearted spooksville as it hosts its annual Scarecrow Festival.

Around 100 scarecrows – ranging from the traditional to topical parodies (we particularly like the Rebekah Brooks monstrosity) – are dotted all around the village located in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales near to Skipton.

Initiated in 1994, the event raises funds for local establishments and draws in intrigued visitors from far and wide. This year’s festival runs until 21 August.

Bonkers, utterly bonkers.
