Launching a nuclear weapon at a country must be a horrifying act. In one press of a button, or utterance down a phone, you are effectively causing the obliteration of millions within the blink of an eye.

No British Prime Minister has ever had to experience this pressure - and now we know that if Jeremy Corbyn were to ever enter No.10, that record would remain intact.

Quizzed on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme as to whether he would ever press the big red button if he were PM, the new Labour leader flatly replied, "No," reminding the panel that "We are not in the era of the Cold War anymore; it finished a long time ago."

"I am opposed to the use of nuclear weapons. I am opposed to the holding of nuclear weapons. I want to see a nuclear-free world. I believe it is possible,” he added, referring to his continued stance on not renewing Britain’s Trident program.

With the maverick under pressure to win over the centre left backbenchers and unite his fractured party at this week’s Labour conference, his comments on Trident might not exactly help this goal. Particularly as it comes just days after one of his biggest backers during the Labour election, Unite's General Secretary Len McCluskey, said his group would be voting to keep Trident, as cutting the multi-billion pound system would cost jobs.

And lest we forget the possible MILITARY COUP one army general recently said would happen if Corbyn were to take the reins of power. For Corbyn, this issue could well be the defining moment of his candidacy, but should he have even raised it?

After all, while certainly a refreshing discourse to have on nuclear weapons, which could very well one day end the world as we know it, perhaps he might have been better avoiding the hypotheticals over nukes, saying he’ll merely cross that bridge and potentially blow it to smithereens when he comes to it.

What if we’re double bluffing anyway? What if, unbeknownst to us, Trident was scrapped long ago and we’re now just charting empty subs around so the likes of Putin and Jong-Un think we’re still some sort of world power. An empty deterrent.
