Now here’s an elevator we wouldn't mind getting trapped in.

Currently whisking passengers up to the observatory lounge at the top of New York’s One World Trade Centre, this glass-walled elevator is about to treat its guests to a stunning 3D visual history of the city.

A whopping 515 years have been cajoled into the brilliant visual ride - now captured in a video for The New York Times - which treats visitors to a look at how quickly the seeds of the Big Apple have grown, all before their ears have finished popping.

The journey begins from submerged terrain (the One World Trade Centre site was nothing but boggy marshes five centuries ago), before rising up through the familiar buildings we come to associate with the town over the last century, including, inevitably, those two fallen towers which went on to lay the foundations for this new beacon of high-rise hope.

Five of the building's elevators will roll out this bonus attraction from next month.

It won’t beat Disney’s Tower Of Terror for elevator-based thrills, but it looks fun nonetheless.
