Here's how you can help those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire

From donating money to giving blood

Here's how you can help those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire
14 June 2017

Six people have died – with that figure expected to rise – and more than 50 have been inured in a huge fire in West London.

The fire at Grenfell Tower, Kensington, has been described by Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton as an “unprecedented incident”. She also stated that she had “never ever seen anything of this scale” in 29 years of being a firefighter.

After the event unfolded, many Londoners offered up shelter and support nearby: mosques, churches and temples opened their doors, and Jamie Oliver offered his White City restaurant out to anyone who had been affected by the fire.

Here’s how you can help the victims.

Donate money

A number of crowdfunding pages have emerged in the wake of the event.

  • The Kensington & Chelsea’s foundation page is raising money locally; “they will coordinate the distribution of funds where they are most needed,” says the Rugby Portobello Trust.
  • JustGiving has also ensured that money raised by these fundraising pages will go to the right place after many worried their cash was being directed into the wrong hands
  • One page has already raised over £150,000 for the cause
  • The Big Give has set up an emergency appeal, and is matching all donations made via the site.

Donate clothing, toys, bedding and blankets

Need for clothing donations has decreased since this morning due to overwhelming public support: St Clements Church, the Rugby Portabello Trust, Kensington Town Hall and the Tabernacle Christian Centre have all stated that they would now prefer monetary donations.

If you still want to donate clothing, toiletries, blankets, underwear or toys, the Westway Sports Centre is still helping those affected by the fire.

Give blood

The NHS’ official Give Blood account has stated that they are not in need of emergency donations, but it’s as good a time as any to donate your time (and blood) to help out others.

Volunteering

Again, it’s worth calling Kensington Town Hall (020 7361 3008) before you head down to check if they need your skills. But they are in need of volunteers, it’s likely to be in one of the following centres:

  • The Salvation Army, 205 Portobello Road, W11 1LU
  • Westway Sports & Fitness Centre, 1 Crowthorne Rd, London W10 6RP
  • St Clement Church, Treadgold St, W11 4BP
  • Rugby Portobello Trust, Walmer Rd, W11 4EY

All organisations involved with gathering blankets, food and more for victims of the fire are likely to tweet if they need any help – so keep an eye out on social media.
