This is how the Grenfell victims were touchingly remembered one year after the disaster
14 June 2018

Exactly one year ago, at 12.54am, a small kitchen fire broke out at Grenfell Tower in Kensington, West London.

The flames that should have been contained to one flat instead rapidly spread to the entire building with terrifying speed, leaving 72 dead.

The tragedy has launched a major inquiry, which is now underway.

And now, on this one-year anniversary, the victims on the disaster have been touchingly remembering with the entire tower being illuminated green at the same time as a memorial vigil, where the victims names’ were read aloud.

The local community marched past the illuminated tower

Family members and friends carried images of their lost loved ones

Candles were also lit at the vigil

The London Eye was also lit up in solidarity:

A minute’s silence will also be observed across the country at midday today.

Grenfell United, the official organisation for the bereaved, survivors and community of Grenfell Tower, said on Twitter: “1 year ago at 00:54 a fire started at Grenfell Tower. 72 lives were lost because of that fire and our live were changed forever. Forever in our Hearts.”

Other officials have been weighing in on the one-year anniversary of the national tragedy.

Cressida Dick, the Metropolitan Police commissioner, said in a statement: “The terrible tragedy of Grenfell Tower remains very real, raw and painful for many people, every day. My thoughts, and those of all us in Met, are with all those who died, the loved ones left behind, and all those who survived the fire that night.

“The continued resilience and sense of spirit shown by the community at the heart of this tragedy is inspiring. Many of us will take time today - one year on - to think back and remember.

“Met officers and staff continue to work very hard to progress our ongoing investigation, to assist the Public Inquiry and provide support to families.”

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn added: “Today marks the one year anniversary of the tragic Grenfell Tower fire – in which 72 people lost their lives. We remember those who died and renew our commitment to fight for justice on behalf of Grenfell Tower residents, their families and loved ones.”

And MP David Lammy, who has been one of the loudest advocates for the victims, said: “Those responsible still walk free, one year on. 12 months have gone by and there has been no ban on dangerous cladding. 52 weeks and many victims are in hotel rooms waiting to be rehoused. Still no justice, still no peace.”

In another touching tribute, Sky News captured the moment a tube driver stopped his train to wave a green banner in solidarity with the victims:
