Exploding Kittens Card Game Sets New Kickstarter Record

The internet still loves cats. Hardly headline news, but a point that's just been reinforced by record numbers Kickstarter.

Over 108,000 people - a record number of backers for a single project on the crowd funding site - have amassed to support a new card game, Exploding Kittens, raising some £3 million in the process.

Designed by an unlikely three-man team (Elan Lee, former chief design officer of Xbox, Shane Small, former art director at Xbox, and Matthew Inman, founder of The Oatmeal web comic), the game sees players take turns drawing cards from the deck. Should they draw a kitten card, they explode, taking them out of the game. Players survive by countering with a selection of excellent-if-odd cards, defusing the deadly kittens (say with a laser pointer) or activating special powers with a cat card. It's Russian Roulette, but with cats.

Having raise its $10,000 funding goal in 20 minutes and reaching $100,000 in under an hour, the Exploding Kittens project still has some 21 days left to set a new Kickstarter funding record to match its (rapidly growing) achievement of most-ever-backers.

Head over to the project page to find out what all the fuss is about - you can still order a deck for around £14.
