Donald Trump's lawyer says the president ‘could shoot the FBI Director’ and get away with it

Donald Trump’s new lawyer Rudy Giuliani has only been representing the president for a few weeks but he’s already put his foot in his mouth on national television quite a few times. In May, he let slip the bombshell news that Trump had in fact paid his personal attorney Michael Cohen $130,000 as re-imbursement for payments to porn star Stormy Daniels.

And this weekend he raised eyebrows by saying that the president has the power to pardon himself, which sounds a bit dictatorial if you ask me:

But it’s Giuliani’s latest comments that are perhaps the most frightening of all. In an interview with HuffPost, the lawyer and former Mayor of New York claimed that Trump hypothetically could have shot the former FBI director James Comey to end the Russia investigation and not face prosecution for it while in office.

Giuliani argued that Trump’s presidential power extends so far that “in no case can he be subpoenaed or indicted.”

“I don’t know how you can indict while he’s in office. No matter what it is,” he said.

The President’s lawyer said Trump would face impeachment (potential removal from office) rather than prosecution.

“If he shot James Comey, he’d be impeached the next day. Impeach him, and then you can do whatever you want to do to him.”

And as chilling as these comments are, they in fact echo something Trump notoriously said during the presidential campaign in 2016.

Explaining his apparent untouchability, Trump told a rally in Iowa: “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, okay, and I wouldn’t lose any voters, okay? It’s, like, incredible.”

While we shouldn’t assume anything about this White House, we don’t think Trump is actually going to start shooting up his political opponents or people investigating him. 

All this talk is more than likely a way of laying the groundwork for Trump to shield himself – and those around him – from any legal harm if the Russia investigation starts turning up dirt on the president or his family.
