Donald Trump has cancelled his big meeting with Kim Jong-Un - and this is his reason why
24 May 2018

It was set to be the sit-down of the century: a meeting between the President of the United States and the leader of nuclear-armed rogue state North Korea. It would have been the first such meeting in history. And it was so hyped it even had diplomacy watchers wondering whether Trump could, bizarrely, find himself in the running for a Nobel Peace Prize.

But, alas, all those hopes for peace on the Korean peninsula have now been dashed as Donald Trump just cancelled the upcoming summit, which was supposed to take place in Singapore in June.

In a typically Trumpian letter addressed to Kim Jong-Un, the US president said today: “l was very much looking forward to being there with you. Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting.

“Therefore, please let this letter serve to represent that the Singapore summit, for the good of both parties, but to the detriment of the world, will not take place.”

In a very threatening move, and one which almost certainly confirms that he dictated the letter himself, Trump goes on: “You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used.”

The letter finishes off by saying: “If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write. The world, and North Korea in particular, has lost a great opportunity for lasting peace and great prosperity and wealth. This missed opportunity is a truly sad moment in history.”

The letter was issued in response to angry remarks issued by a diplomat from North Korea, who are upset about America’s demand they give up their nuclear weapons before the summit.

North Korean diplomat Choe Son-hui said on Wednesday: “Whether the US will meet us at a meeting room or encounter us at nuclear-to-nuclear showdown is entirely dependent upon the decision … of the US.”

The meeting with Kim Jong-Un is now off

She added: “We will neither beg the US for dialogue nor take the trouble to persuade them if they do not want to sit together with us.

“We can also make the US taste an appalling tragedy it has neither experienced nor even imagined up to now.”

Vice President Mike Pence also waded into the drama by warning that North Korea could go the way of Libya – whose dictatorial leader Muammar Gaddafi was killed in a Western-backed uprising in 2011 – if they don’t agree to a deal.

But the summit, and the potential peace deal, is now off.

What a shame, what are they going to do with all those peace coins now?
