Buy your own Viking ship
16 June 2014

Planning any raids this summer? Venturing into unknown waters or exploring virgin coastlines in the name of territorial expansion? Just fancy your own Viking ship? You're in luck.

The Viking Ship Museum (who else?) is offering a unique service that will excite lovers of all things Nordic: your very own hand-built Viking vessel.

Constructed at the museum's very own shipyard, a range of boats are available to prospective Scandinavian sailors. Should you opt for the most authentic of Viking ships going, craftsmen will fell and prepare all timber by hand with traditional Viking tools - so no hand saws, drills or sand paper.

Finished with hand-made rope, nails and sails, the most archaic of options will take several months to complete - but 'streamlined' versions are available if your pillaging expedition can't wait. A small Gokstad (10 metres, 6 pair of oars and sail) will set you back between €33,000 – €53,000 (£26,400 - £42,000), while a Skuldelev 6 (12 metres, seven pair of oars and sail) can be as much as €400,000 (£320,000).

In case your last raid hasn't left you with enough plunder for a ship, it's still worth checking out the other items available on the CultureNordic site. Their range of Nordic goods includes hand-made swords, ceramics and fabrics made with traditional techniques from a variety of museum groups and artisan craftsmen.

And no, they don't sell the helmets with the horns - they were never a real thing.
