Two of the most critically acclaimed films due to hit multiplexes this summer. Two very different plots. One brilliant trailer mash-up.
On the one hand you have Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, a post-apocalyptic action film with apes firing machine guns on horseback. On the other, Richard Linklater’s adolescent drama Boyhood, where there are predictably less apes firing machine guns on horseback.
Though thanks to the neat work of video essayist Nelson Carvajal, it seems there is a middle ground. Focusing on the emotional crux of primate Caesar, nurtured in Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes by James Franco’s scientist and now leader of the angry band of apes in the big budget sequel, Carvajal has spliced the wistful, melancholic parts with quotes, taglines and even the hero track seen in the Boyhood trailers.
If there were any reason to book cinema tickets for both films, this is it.
