Think of vintage Batman and you could be forgiven for conjuring up images of ill-fitting Lycra, karate chops and a flurry of typeface ‘Kablams’ invading the screen.
Thankfully, however, Adam West’s camp crusader of the ‘60s wasn’t quite what Italian comic book artist Francesco Francavilla had in mind when it came to sketching a throwback type of Dark Knight for a special series of sketches - instead venturing towards more rugged, cool stylistics of the ‘70s which show our hero hunched over some bloodied corpse in a leather jacket. Other highlights include a Warhol-like Joker, and Jim Gordon boasting a handlebar moustache Robert Redford would be envious of.
No word on an actual comic series as of yet. In the meantime you can pore over the best of Batman 1972 below.
