A monkey just turned the lights off for an entire country

We all know that cheeky monkeys are capable of a few neat tricks: opening bananas, playing games, making cups of tea, but you won't believe what they've been up to this time.

The citizens of Kenya were dumbfounded yesterday as news reached them that a nationwide electricity blackout that cut out lights, internet and anything with a plug for over three hours on Tuesday was caused by a monkey.

The animal seemingly climbed onto the roof of the Gitaru Hydroelectric Power Station and either jumped, or fell, onto a transformer, tripping it, which then tripped a series of connected machines, triggering a nationwide blackout.

Just look at him, he knows he's gone too far this time, doesn't he?

The Kenya Electricity Generation Company posted on Facebook: “KenGen power installations are secured by electric fencing, which keeps away marauding wild animals. We regret this isolated incident and the company is looking at ways of further enhancing security at all our power plants.”

Before you ask - the good news is that the monkey, a member of the Vervet species with a fancy white fur collar, survived the incident and was passed onto the country's wildlife services.

Hopefully, he's now just chilling out after the incident, like this guy.
