If you ever wanted to see Disney World on steroids, a new unfathomably tall skyscraper planned to top Dubai's Burj Khalifa by some 150m, could be set to give us just that.
Soaring to 1km at its highest point, the Phoenix Towers - commissioned by China’s Hua Yan Group and designed by British design firm Chetwoods - has been marked for the Chinese city of Wuhan to double as both a tourist attraction and eco-friendly hub.
The multicolored behemoth will host a range of functions to purify the city’s polluted air and lakes using multiple filtration systems and solar electricity plants, while, oddly, each tower has been designed to emulate the raised root system of a mangrove tree.
As for the tourist element, these towers are just one part of a 47 hectare island project which the developers hope will boost Chinese tourism, meaning there's every chance of a theme park.
The architecture team claim construction will begin within the next 12 months, with a completion date of three years, which, unless the proposed Kingdom Tower in Jeddah is completed first, will make it our closest man-made structure to space.
