The word of the year

When it comes to finding out which words have monopolised the year, we'd generally trust the advice of those involved with dictionaries.

Merriam-Webster has assembled a list of the words that users have looked up the most on their web dictionary and the one which tops them all? Pragmatic.

The word, which relates to "matters of fact or practical affairs", grew in popularity during the summer's debt ceiling vote. Last year's word was, depressingly, austerity and it was still included in this year's list.

Other words of the year include ambivalence, insidious, didactic, diversity, capitalism, socialism and vitriol. From all of this information, we can ascertain absolutely nothing of note.
