Jonathan Pile, editor of our daily email, on date-impressing tipples

Purl, Hampstead, NW3

A rum and coke, basically. But a rum and coke that’s made with a cola reduction and orange bitters and is served in wax-sealed bottle that comes to the table in a smoking bottle of liquid nitrogen. We won’t drink them any other way.

Rum Blazer

Shaka Zulu, Camden, NW1

Only available as a dessert. Even if you ask really nicely. Made at your table with two types of rum, Grand Marnier and various fruits then set on fire. Just so you know: it’s a big restaurant and everyone will stare.

Holy Smoke

Lounge Bohemia, EC2

Just one of the Blumenthal-level cocktails served at Lounge Bohemia. VSOP cognac is infused with untreated cow hide (tastes better than that sounds), and Frankincense and Myrrh smoke. Oh, and it’s served hidden in a bible.

Bloody Caesar

Newman Street Tavern, W1

A bloody mary, just one made with clam juice and served with an oyster on top. And, when you’re done drinking, it’s also an excellent pub with its butchery handled on site and its own fisherman working the Cornish coast every morning.
