McDonald’s Is Launching Table Service

If you'd like to take a seat, the Hamburglar will be with you shortly to take your order. Our somelier Grimace will furnish you with beverage options and our chef Ronald truly hopes you enjoy today's gastronomic experience.

Well, your next experience at McDonald's probably won't be quite that level of fine dining, but it will be going up a notch with the announcement that McDonald's is rolling out table service across the UK in October, following a successful trial in 15 restaurants.

Stores will be fitted with "digital kiosks", devices similar to giant iPads, enabling customers to self-serve before taking a buzzer, sitting at their table and waiting for their order to be delivered by someone who we truly hope and pray will be forced to say "I'm lovin' it" to each and every customer as they drop off their order.

As part of a £350m overhaul to help them compete with the likes of Nandos, GBK and Five Guys, the franchise is also increasing customisation options, with customers being given choices over bread, cheese, toppings and sauce. We're not quite sure how giving people the option to have gherkin or not is going to cost £350m but, hey, we didn't invent the McFlurry so what do we know?

Drive-thrus are also making a long-awaited move to the digital world, with the old crackling intercoms soon to be replaced by similar iPad-style devices. But then who wouldn't want to eat in with the new regime on offer in store?

We'll go for the 2015 strawberry milkshake please - we're assured it's a very good vintage.
