Rumours that the burger’s time has passed were wide of the mark – what we actually needed, it turns out, were even more burgers.

How else is the tech world going to figure out how to draw a burger emoji properly, after all?

A fair few of the most popular American chains now take pride of place in the UK, including Five Guys, Shake Shack, and a little place you might have heard of called McDonald’s.

We might not have a UK branch of Wahlburgers, but we are getting another popular chain – in fact, we’re getting one which was once named the USA’s best.

The Habit Burger Grill had the proud honour of selling the best tasting fast food burger in the United States in 2014, edging out In-N-Out Burger and Five Guys, and the California chain is preparing to launch at multiple locations this side of the Atlantic.

According to the Evening Standard, Habit’s trademark Charburger – with lettuce, tomato, pickles, caramelised onion and mayo – costs just $3.35 (£2.55), while a burger, fries and drink will come to around £9 in the UK.

That means the burger on its own will be comfortably cheaper than a number of other high-street options - many other London chains will set you back comfortably more than a tenner when fries and a drink are included.

It is unclear at this stage whether the UK rollout – in the London suburbs and commuter belt, according to the paper – will see Habit reprise its entire US menu.

In addition to six burgers, the chain sells chicken, steak and tuna sandwiches and vegetarian options, plus a range of salads.

The first branch is due to launch in Bromley in spring 2018. Until then, we’re just going to reminisce about the time some of the UK’s best burger chefs designed their perfect patty for the apocalypse.
