Tom Hanks says the emotional ending of ‘Toy Story 4’ is going to be ‘a moment in history’
02 November 2018

The premise is super simple: what do toys get up to when people aren’t around?

But when that simple idea was brought to life more than 20 years ago, Pixar’s Toy Story became an instant hit.

And the John Lasseter-directed movie, about Woody the cowboy (voiced by Tom Hanks) and astronaut Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Tim Allen), was followed by two sequels — Toy Story 2 (1999) and Toy Story 3 (2010). The films have been so critically acclaimed that they are regularly - rightly in our opinion - regarded as the greatest film trilogy ever made.

Now, as we prepare for the final film’s release in 2019, Tom Hanks is warning us that saying goodbye to these characters is going to be horribly emotional – and he even thinks it’s going to be ‘a moment in history.’

“It was the first time that we were going to be recording the end of the movie, and Toy Story [4] is going to have an impactful ending,” he said on Chris Evans’ Radio 2 Breakfast Show, recalling how he voicied the final scene which occurred on the final day of recording.

“The way you record Toy Story, you’re in a room with the team that has created it. When I went in for my last day of recording, I wanted to have my back to them, because usually, you’re facing him so he can look right up and you can talk about it. But I didn’t want to see them and pretend they couldn’t see me.

“When I realised what they were going for, I realised, ‘Oh, this is a moment in history’.”

And Hanks’ co-star Tim Allen earlier revealed that the ending is so emotional that he “couldn’t even get through the last scene” of the film.

Toy Story 4, directed by Inside Out screenplay writer Josh Cooley, will see Woody and Buzz set out on a journey to find Woody’s love interest, Bo Peep.

You’ve Got a Friend in Me legend Randy Newman is also on board to make the music for the final film, which is excellent news.

Toy Story 4 is set to hit UK cinemas on 21 June 2019.
