Can it go on for another 30 years?

TV bosses at Fox just gave an important update on how long ‘The Simpsons’ is going to last
03 August 2018

It’s the longest-running animated American series in history, the longest running American sitcom in history and longest running scripted prime-time series in history but an important question lingers in our TV-obsessed brains… is The Simpsons still any good?

It’s certainly had a massive impact on TV and pop culture but even with the best intentions something that tries to remain relevant for three decades is going to get tired eventually. And there’s even been a re-examining of some now-dated tropes like the furore around Apu, most notably from comedian Hari Kondabolu’s documentary The Problem With Apu.

But if you’re a fan, you’ll be pleased to hear that The Simpsons could be with us for many, many, many more years to come.

After 28 years on our screens and in anticipation of its record 30th season this autumn, bosses at Fox have confirmed that there are no plans to cancel the programme any time soon.

30 MORE YEARS! 30 MORE YEARS!

Fox co-chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman addressed the future of The Simpsons during the TCA press tour on Thursday.

The Simpsons is so much a part of the brand, there’s been such an incredible halo effect of that show and the other animated series that are on our Sunday night,” Walden said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “There are no plans for them to go anywhere other than Fox.”

“Down the line, what kind of decision is made, I can’t really speak to, but for the foreseeable future, there’s so much upside and benefit to having a great, Emmy Award-winning, smart, provocative, quality show,” she added. “There’s no consideration of not ordering more Simpsons.”

So strap yourself in and prepare for another 30 Simpsons-filled years!

And if you’re extra hungry for more cool stuff from Matt Groening, you can check out his upcoming Netflix series Disenchantment, described by the big man himself as “an adult fantasy about a crumbling medieval kingdom known as Dreamland.”

Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you,” Groening added.
