Here's the first trailer for 'True Detective' series 3

First new trailer sees Academy Award winning Mahershala Ali slide into the driving seat for third season of the divisive detective drama

OK, so, let’s get this in straight away. The general consensus is this: first season of True Detective = good; the second season of True Detective = bad. What this means is that it’s all riding on the third season. It’s why they have three rounds in fighting games, isn’t it? The third round is the decider, so it needs to pack a punch.

Thankfully, this time they have Academy Award winning heavyweight  Mahershala Ali on board this time (you’ll remember him swiping the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his incredible Moonlight performance). It’s pretty strong casting decision, if we do say so, and if Ali’s record is anything to go by, it looks like this one will land on the “good” end of the scale.

Here’s the first teaser trailer:

Supposedly this season will be heading back to basics, à la the first series (an utterly excellent series with potentially career defining performances from Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, seriously, see below:

Speaking to The Observer about the latest series, new cast-member Jon Tenney said:

“I can’t get into real specifics, but I think it does move a little bit in the direction of season one… a little bit more maybe than season two.

“The scripts are just so compelling. Again, really moving. The company is great. I can’t really say a whole lot, but I’m thrilled to be part of it and I think people are going to really dig it.”

This series will follow Ali’s detective as he looks into a missing children case in Southern Missouri, with the official plot synopsis reading “The next instalment of True Detective tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.”

The show also stars Stephen Dorff (who is great, actually, give him more roles), Ray Fisher (Cyborg from Justice League - remember him?), Lonnie Chavis (This Is Us), Carmen Ejogo (Alien: Covenant), Scoot McNairy (Monsters), Mamie Gummer (The Good Wife), Brandon Flynn (13 Reasons Why), Jodi Balfour (The Crown) and Michael Graziadei (American Horror Story). Now breathe and think about what the kind of line-up could really do given half the chance.

The show will air in January 2019. HOW VERY EXCITING FOR FANS OF DETECTIVES.
