We'd welcome him back

This 'Game of Thrones' favourite wants to bring his dead character back for the prequel
14 November 2017

He was one of the most brutal, cunning characters in all of the Seven Kingdoms. He served as Hand of the King for three different rulers and as Protector of the Realm. That is, until he was killed by his own son with a crossbow to the chest while sitting on the toilet.

And now Charles Dance, the actor who played Tywin Lannister, has confirmed that he would like to take part in a Game of Thrones prequel series if he was confident it would be as good as the original show.

When asked about the possibility by Metro.co.uk, he replied: “If it was in the same calibre, yes. Because Game of Thrones really was as good as it gets. It’s a fantastic series.”

He added: “I look back on it fondly. Occasionally you have long days in the cold, the horse doesn’t behave properly, or the armour sticks in the back of your neck, but we’re not down in the mines digging for coal, we’re actors.”

Dance could well be in luck because it’s been reported there are no less than five GoT prequel series currently in the works. Yes, we repeat: FIVE.

Information about them is being kept tightly under wraps but in September, when announcing that long-time GoT staff writer Bryan Cogman was writing one of the prequels, George R. R. Martin discussed the projects on his blog.

He wrote: “I’d love to tell you more about the series Bryan will be working on… but we haven’t done that for the other four successor shows, so we shouldn’t for this one either. All in good time.

“I can say that, like the other pilots, it will be a prequel rather than sequel, a successor rather than a spin-off. Bryan’s series will be an adaptation, and one that will thrill most fans of the books, I think, set during a very exciting period of Westerosi history. And I’ll be working with him every step of the way; we’re going to be co-creating the show.

“HBOshould have a wealth of material to choose from. (And that’s not even counting the four weird-ass series concepts I’ve come up on my own, just for the hell of it. There are eight million stories in the naked city, and maybe ten times as many in Westeros and the lands beyond the narrow seas.)”

If he did return, the shows could possibly explore Tywin’s role as Hand of the King under Mad King Aerys II, whose reign was brought to an end by Robert’s Rebellion, or perhaps we could see the beginning of his troubled relationship with Tyrion since Joanna Lannister (Tywin’s wife) died in childbirth.

We’ve also had a think about some other iconic characters we’d love to see get a fuller back story in the GoT prequels:

  1. 1.Eddard "Ned" Stark (Sean Bean)

  2. 2.The Queen of Thorns Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg)

  3. 3.Shae (Sibel Kekilli)

  4. 4.Three-Eyed Raven (Max von Sydow)

  5. 5.Osha (Natalia Tena)

  6. 6.Syrio Forel (Miltos Yerolemou)
