The X-Files Officially Returning For 6 New Episodes

Tape your windows and put that tinfoil hat back on - The X-Files is officially returning for a six-part series with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson donning the trench coats once more to play agents Mulder and Scully.

Most fans of the cult show, which ended in 2002, would never have thought that the duo would return to TV. However, prayers were answered last night when Anderson Tweeted her co-star to ask ‘Mulder, it's me. Are you ready?’

While no broadcast date has been announced, original series creator Chris Carter is on writing duties once again. “I think of it as a 13-year commercial break. The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories,” he said of the news.

Those thoughts were echoed by Fox chairman Gary Newman: “The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture — yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans, and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they've been waiting for."

The last time we saw the paranormal hunting pair was in the dud Hollywood spin-off film I Want To Believe, where Mulder was no longer at odds with 'the man' and Scully had returned to her medical career. We look forward to seeing how the series picks things back up.

And all going well, your work colleagues will be whistling the theme tune by the end of the year.
