The Satanic Temple is suing Netflix because of 'The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina'

The scariest lawsuit in history

The Satanic Temple is suing Netflix because of 'The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina'
09 November 2018

The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina is Netflix’s latest big hit - the update of the classic ‘90s kids’ show Sabrina The Teenage Witch has been hogging all the good reviews and pleasing viewers all around the world. Unless of course, those viewers belong to the Satanic Temple - in that case, it has been doing the opposite, which is displeasing, should you be wondering.

Why? Well because in four episodes of the show, a funny looking goat-type statue with wings is seen in the Academy of Unseen Arts, and his name is Baphomet. In “real-life”, it’s a deity that the Knights Templar were falsely accused of worshipping - so it dates all the way back to the 1300s - but it’s popped up in the show as well. It’s also a rather big part of the Satanic Temple, who are claiming that the show stole their statue design, and are now suing.

Lucien Greaves, co-founder of the Satanic Temple, nipped onto Twitter to explain the similarities:

So yeah, quite similar, but when you consider that this image:

dates all the way back to the 19th century, it becomes a little harder to argue. Still, Greaves reckons it has a number of parts which make it an “original expression” (presumably the children looking up at Baphomet?). He continues:

“We are claiming copyright infringement for their use of our unique Baphomet monument design in their show as a central icon for a cannibalistic cult.

“We are not laying claim to Baphomet itself, but rather our original interpretation of Baphomet that has become a central icon to our organisation, much like a corporate logo.

“It’s distressing on the grounds that you have to worry about that association being made where people will see your monument and not know which preceded the other, and thinking that you arbitrarily decided to go with the Sabrina design for your Baphomet monument, which rather cheapens our central icon.”

Either way, they’ve chucked a $50 million lawsuit at Netflix. And they’ll probably win, won’t they? Netflix have money coming out of every orifice, so they may as well pay them off. And besides, if they don’t, then they’ll definitely go to Hell. And nobody wants that.
