The drip-drip-drip of information about the upcoming season of Peaky Blinders is continuing, and we’ve got a lot to be excited about.

After four strong seasons, the show is moving to BBC One and potentially gaining a great number of new fans in the process.

Millions have been on board since the start, though, and are very familiar with the characters and storylines, and if you’re one of them you may well react with intrigue at the news things are about to get much, much darker.

The channel change isn’t the only exciting update that’s coming with the the fifth season, which will air in 2019.

So far we know the creators are planning on bringing back a few favourite Peaky Blinders cast members, while Anthony Byrne has been brought in to direct the next batch of Steven Knight-penned episodes

We also know there will be a decent amount about Arthur Shelby’s political career, thanks to some intriguing comments from actor Paul Anderson.

However, according to Knight himself, the darkness is being ramped up for Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy), and fans are sure to speculate about just what that might mean.

“The story of the Peaky Blinders and of the Shelby family gets woven into the political fabric of Britain and Europe as the 1920s end and the ‘30s begin,” Knight, the creator of the show, is quoted as saying by Digital Spy.

“Tommy Shelby faces the darkest force he has ever faced and his struggle is as relevant today as it was then.”

Tom Hardy’s Alfie Solomons is not among the names listed as definitely appearing in season five, and he seemed pretty dead by the end of the last episode – could the dark turn be related to the fallout from this?

The new synopsis reads as follows:

“Series five of Steven Knight’s crime family saga finds the world thrown into turmoil by the financial crash of 1929. Opportunity and misfortune are everywhere.

“When Tommy Shelby MP (Cillian Murphy) is approached by a charismatic politician with a bold vision for Britain, he realises that his response will affect not just his family’s future but that of the entire nation.”

They’re at least keeping some of their cards close to their chests.
