These were the most-binged shows on Netflix in 2017

This is what had us hooked this year

These were the most-binged shows on Netflix in 2017
12 December 2017

Remember when we used to spend our free time doing things like ‘hobbies’ and ‘activities’ and ‘having friends’? No, me neither.

For better or worse, there is so much great programming on Netflix these days that we never need to go outside again, and now the streaming giant has rounded up the shows we were most unable to tear ourselves away from this year.

They have released a series of graphics detailing what and how we watched in 2017, and it includes a number of surprises.

Firstly, it lists American Vandal as the most-binged show of the year. While we have already written about how excellent the true-crime mockumentary about penis drawings at an American high school is, we didn’t expect it to come out number one.

But what’s even more surprising is the one person who apparently watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl every single day this year. I mean, it’s not even a very good movie.

According to Netflix, the top ten most-binged shows of the year (meaning people watched at least two hours of them per day) are as follows:

  1. American Vandal
  2. 3%
  3. 13 Reasons Why
  4. Anne with an E
  5. Riverdale
  6. Ingobernable
  7. Travelers
  8. The Keepers
  9. The OA
  10. The Confession Tapes

Meanwhile, the shows we ‘savoured’ (watched less than two hours per day) are:

  1. The Crown
  2. Big Mouth
  3. Neo Yokio
  4. A Series of Unfortunate Events
  5. GLOW
  6. Friends from College
  7. Ozark
  8. Atypical
  9. Dear White People
  10. Disjointed

Netflix also provided us with a bunch of other interesting statistics, including the fact that 1 January is the most popular streaming day of the year, probably owing to the fact that literally everybody in the entire world is hungover.

It also revealed that 140 million hours of content is watched every single day, which totals a billion hours a week. And that’s just in my house.

Netflix also let us know that the average viewer watches 60 movies per year, and that Mexico was the country most hooked on their Netflix this year.

And as for the shows that were most likely to get us in trouble? Well, Narcos came top of the list of shows people watched before their partner. The top 10 went as follows:

  1. Narcos
  2. 13 Reasons Why
  3. Stranger Things
  4. Orange is the New Black
  5. Sense8
  6. Black Mirror
  7. The Defenders
  8. Iron Fist
  9. Ozark
  10. Mindhunter

Stranger Things was the show most people watched together as a family

Meanwhile, Stranger Things came top of an all the more wholesome list - shows people liked to watch together as a family.

13 Reasons Why again came high up in this list, proving that despite being controversial, the drama about teenage eating disorders was extremely popular this year.

Here are the top ten shows people watched as a family:

  1. Stranger Things
  2. 13 Reasons Why
  3. A Series of Unfortunate Events
  4. Star Trek Discovery
  5. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life
  6. Riverdale
  7. Fuller House
  8. Chef’s Table
  9. Atypical
  10. Anne with an E

We met up with Netflix in Berlin last week, to discover the future of TV, and let me tell you one thing - you’re not going to spend any time with your friends in 2018 either.

To be honest, I can’t really complain. TV is my best friend now.
