Heard the one about the time the Devil got bored of hell, renounced his throne and opened a piano bar in Los Angeles? Wait, that's not actually the set up for a joke - it's the improbable storyline of DC's Lucifer comic series, now headed to a small screen near you.

Word comes from Deadline that Fox is set to add to the growing rostra of DC comic adaptations (joining Arrow, Sandman, The Flash, Gotham and Constantine), committing to creating a pilot episode of Lucifer with Californication creator/executive producer Tom Kapinos and Warner Bros. TV.

Published by DC's Vertigo Comics, Lucifer was a successful 75-part run that spawned from a supporting character in Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Rather than appearing as a horns-and-pitch-fork character, the titular character draws parallels with John Milton's fallen angel of Paradise Lost.

One of the darker titles of forthcoming comic adaptations, here's hoping Lucifer adds some much-needed grit to the line up of small screen hopefuls.
