While George R R Martin is staying decidedly schtum on when he'll get around to finishing his next book, the Game of Thrones author has been remarkably vocal about other outlets for his work - most recently, the potential for culminating the HBO show in a big budget feature film.
Martin voiced his thoughts on a film finale while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter during this week's Game of Thrones fourth season premiere in New York: "It all depends on how long the main series runs. Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger (in scope). It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know."
While HBO have done a superb job at adapting Martin's work for the small screen, we'd put good money on a sprawling feature-length romp with multiple Hobbit-esque dragons drawing something of a crowd.
The author also commented that a three-part prequel novella, Tales of Dunk and Egg, could also be fit for a big-screen outing. "They could be the basis for [a film]," Martin told THR. "I have written these three stories, and I have about a dozen more." Tales of Dunk and Egg focuses on events and characters 90 years before the action of A Song of Ice and Fire, including Ser Duncan the Tall and some direct ancestors of the Game of Thrones cast.
When would these films emerge? If Martin's time scale is anything to go by (he started writing the books back in 1991), we won't be seeing them for quite some time yet. To help get over your inevitable disappointment, here's the latest trailer for the fourth series:
