'Game of Thrones' might've just confirmed every fan's wildest dreams for Season 8
28 August 2017

GET YOUR MEGAPHONE OUT TOOT TOOT IT’S TIME TO GET HYPE!!!!

Too much? OK, sorry, but I hope we can all agree that Game of Thrones just served us up a brilliant and satisfying season finale that is only going to make us more devastated when HBO predictably announce that Season 8 won’t be coming until 2019. We bet you.

Obviously lots went down – Jon and Dany banged, Cersei saw a wight with her own eyes, Jaime left his sister to ride north and fight the White Walkers, oh, and the Night King brought down The Wall using Viserion’s blue ice/fire/magic/I dunno? – but we’re not here to talk about that, because that’s not what the megaphone is for. We’re here to talk about something that didn’t happen, but in Season 8 now surely – finally – will.

Because yes, after years of memes and endless theories, Cleganebowl is motherfucking confirmed. Maybe. Probably. I mean, after this, it fucking better be.

Sandor and Gregor Clegane, aka The Hound and The Mountain, haven’t come face to face since their scrap in Season 1, but theories have been floating around about ‘Cleganebowl’ ever since – the idea that the two will one day fight to the death, in a battle between two brothers, who just so happen to also be two of the greatest killers in Westeros.

The two have hated each other since childhood, and The Mountain is responsible for the burns on Sandor’s face – the young Gregor found The Hound playing with a toy he had earlier discarded, and reacted by thrusting his brother’s face into a burning brazier.

And in the Season 7 finale, the pair finally faced off again, both on separate sides of the war between Cersei and Daenerys. As The Hound spotted his bother, and strode purposefully towards the man everyone else makes steps to avoid, we thought we might be getting the showdown there and then, but no, the show teased us.

However, it gave us a promise – a promise that it better damn keep, or there are going to be a lot of very angry people on David Benioff and D. B. Weiss’ doorsteps.

IT'S ON... next season

“Remember me?” Sandor asks, as he stares directly into his brother’s red, bloody eyes. “Yeah, you do. You’re even fucking uglier than I am now. What did they do to you? Doesn’t matter – it’s not how it ends for you, brother. You know who’s coming for you – you’ve always known.”

That’s as good as confirmed, right? It’s happening. IT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING. CLEGANEBOWL 2K19!!!

Fans have been going on about it for so long now that it’d be almost mad for the show to not include it eventually, but it does need to have some kind of actual purpose – and that made me think, what if killing The Mountain is what the Lord of Light has planned for Sandor Clegane? What if that is his destiny?

One of the many, many memes

That somehow makes the whole showdown feel even more exciting. Unless The Mountain wins, obviously – that would ruin the whole thing – but he won’t, because I believe in my boy Sandor – he’s going to pull this off.

Only two years to wait (probably) – but don’t worry, it’s never too early to get hype.
