We've never found ourselves hooked on Friday Night Dinner. While the gentle, awkward humour of Robert Popper's show makes for pleasant watching, it's never had us in the same way The Inbetweeners stole our chuckles. Yet, much like the latter-mentioned comedy, Popper's family meal is headed over the pond for an adaptation.
News comes via Deadline that US network CBS has bought an adaptation of the Channel 4 comedy. The project, which will be produced by Warner Bros. TV and 3 Arts Entertainment, has been promised a put pilot from CBS, though a date for the show is yet to be finalised.
This is the second time Popper's series has been courted by American networks: NBC brought The Office developer Greg Daniels onto a project to adapt the series in 2011-12 , creating a pilot starring Allison Janney and Tony Shalhoub. Obviously, it failed to pick up a series.
Popper will be writing the script for the Warner Bros. TV adaptation, which will stay true to the original flavours of his series - though there's no word yet on whether the CBS adaptation will follow the Shabbat meals of Jewish family. Here's hoping it doesn't go the same way as MTV's The Inbetweeners.
