Constantine TV series announced

Superheroes are getting out of hand. The war for box office numbers is drawing new battle lines in the world of television, with future schedules filling up with comic book capers.

This week, following hard on the heels of positive mumbles surrounding Marvel's Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D, Fox announced new its own comic book TV series, Gotham: an episodic prequel to Batman that will follow the early exploits of Commissioner James Gordon in the titular city before the arrival of the dark knight himself.

Now word comes, via The Hollywood Reporter, that DC Comics' supernatural detective Constantine is to receive similar small screen treatment.

John Constantine, the nonchalant anti-hero who originally appeared in 1985's horror series The Saga of the Swamp Thing, is the creation of comic book legends Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and John Totleben. Originally a foul-mouthed Brit, 2005's film adaptation saw Keanu Reeves play the detective charged with protecting the Earth from the unwanted influences of Heaven, Hell and the afterlife. His wars with the supernatural and things from the swamp promise the TV series a host of fun grizzlies to investigate.

David S. Goyer (who has previously worked on Man of Steel, The Dark Knight Rises, The Dark Knight and Batman Begins and Daniel Cerone (The Mentalist) are signed on to write the script. We're praying to the comic gods that this DC adaptation has a little more bite than the fairly tedious Arrow.
